After a seemingly endless winter break,  the local racing season finally got under way over the weekend at the 2015 Warriors Cycling|Rocky Mountain Endurance series Ridgeline Rampage.

Thomas arrived at Bison Park in Castle Rock, CO in search of a three peat, having won this race in both 2013, and 2014.  Not certain of his form as he scaled back a little on his bike miles this spring in order to improve his swim and run for the Xterra Off-Road Triathlons he’ll be focusing later on in the summer.

His Cannondale F29 was dialed in and ready to go Saturday morning. The race started out on a bike path for about 2 1/2 minutes before hitting the single track. Thomas didn’t want to be caught in the back, so he pushed fairly hard to stay at the front. He took the lead for the first lap or so, until Kalan Beisel was able to pull away from the field. Having done a little bit too much work at the beginning, Thomas didn’t have the legs to respond right away, but he was patient and confident he would be able to reel him back in later in the race.

After the 3rd out of 5 laps Thomas was riding with JJ Clark (ProCycling) in pursuit of Kalan Beisel (Giant Co-Factory Team), but at the beginning of lap number 4 his legs simply shut down on him, and he had to let JJ ride away. Unfortunately for Kalan, he wasn’t able to finish the race after crashing, and then suffering multiple flats. JJ was able to bring home the victory, while Thomas held on to 2nd, holding off 3rd place finisher Mark Currie by a little over 10 seconds.

Thomas  said “It’s always nice to start the season with a good first race, and even though I realized a lot of areas that need improvement, I’m happy about the outcome and excited for the next race in two weeks.”

Next up, Battle of the Bear!
